ENGLISH VERSION
At Tuska Festival Henri Sorvali, the mastermind behind Moonsorrow who usually doesn't tour with Moonsorrow, took part in the gig. So, we had the chance to do an interview with him and his brother Ville. We talked about broken bones and other things that happend during their career.
finnbands: For those who don't know Moonsorrow please describe your band and your musical style in a couple of words.
Henri: We play long songs, we use shit load of distortion and we hate people.
Ville: That's true.
Henri: (to Ville) Your turn.
Ville: I refuse to comment.
finnbands: You've recently been touring with Swallow the Sun and Debauchery. How was the tour?
Henri: I wasn't on tour.
Ville: It was great in all acpects. Nice group of people to travel with in the same bus for three weeks and lots of fine gigs. Some not so fine ones but that happens on every tour anyway. Nice sightseeing around the different cities and lots of tourist pictures.
finnbands: How are the audiences in the different countries? Are there differences for example in Finnland, Germany or Italy?
Ville: I don't really know. It varies there's no real pattern you can follow actually. In some countries you can predict how it's gonna be. Like in Hungary where it's always crazy like hell and we had one gig in Italy there were only hundred in a hall that could take a thousand that looked weird.
finnbands: How did you like todays show?
Ville: It was great!
Henri: It was pain in the ass cause I was handicaped.
finnbands: Handycaped, why?
(both start to laught)
Henri: Because a couple of band members were seriously injured and we still managed to play the gig.
finnbands: What means seriously injured?
Henri: In Markus case his leg was swollen to the size of my leg. He was bitten by some weard bug when he was up north. At the moment his leg is like a tree and he can barely walk. For myself I broke a couple of ribs last week.
finnbands: Oh my god.
Henri: This day I have been mostly in painkillers.
Ville: (Grinning) And he wasn't drunk at that time.
Henri: No, I wasn't drunk at all. (both are laughing)
finnbands: That's when the worst accidents happen.
Ville: He was drunk.
Henri: No, actually I was completey pissed and dropped one meter into a cable box which was made of wood and metal. But things happen and people die.
finnbands: That sounds really bad.
Henri: Try to sleep one night in my pants. No, no that's probably too dirty. I mean like try to imagine yourself waking up every hour from pain.
Ville: That's everyday in this band.
Henri: It's always pain and the next day we will play 'The Cure' covers (to Ville) and you will become the next Robert Smith (laughter).
finnbands: Your can already look back on a bit longer carrer, is there anything you did that you would say it was a big mistake?
Henri: The first album.
Ville(interrupting): In the beginning our first record deal.
Henri: Not the album but the deal.
Ville: We were young and we had to learn and we learned quite fast.
Henri: We were young and we needed the money. (laughter)
We made is shit deal with a shit company who ripped us off.
But in the end if we wouldn't have made this shit deal we would not be here.
So, after all experiences imagine doing three records for Plasmatica Records.
Ville: (with forced smile) Oh.
finnbands (to Ville): I heard you are studying at the moment. How far is your study?
Ville: I haven't been studying for almost three years now. But still hanging on the phone that I could return there one day.
Henri: Future mathmatics teacher.
Ville: I just found that working is much more profitable.
finnbands: So, are you just musicians or do you also have normal dayjobs?
Ville: I have several.
Henri: Let's put it this way: I work in the games industry. It's a long story. You will have a laugh about it because I work in mobile games industry. It's always cool to say 'I work in the games industry' (caugh) mo (caugh) bile games industry (grinning). My normal dayjob is to be sound designer. That's it.
finnbands: What about your best moment on stage or excellent shows you remember?
Ville: Best moments on stage? Hm. One of them happend last week in Belgium. When I realised...
Henri (cuts him off): You are somehow naked. (laughs)
Ville: Yeah, it felt like that. A couple of moments before the intro started I went to check behind the curtain what it is like in the tent and I realised that the tent that had a capacity of ten thousand people was totally full and there were also people outside as well. Then I was like 'What the fuck am I doing here?'
Henri: Meanwhile I was having beers.
Ville: No, it was really great to see so many people on our gig. That never happend before.
finnbands: And one of the worst moments when touring with Moonsorrow.
Ville: We had a lot.
Henri: Norway.
Ville: Yeah, Norway.
Henri: We started to drink at 10 a.m. or something.
Ville: We started to drink when we arrived there.
Henri: And we had to play at 1 o'clock in the morning. We drank like 14 hours, beer and booze and then we went on stage and after the gig when we played like crap we all started to accuse eachother of playing bad. I had a fist fight with Ville and Ville had a fist fight with Mitja and then we got more drunk an settled the thing.
Ville: He actually had a broken jaw bone.
Henri: Oh, that's true. I didn't remember that. The drummer hit me on the head.
Ville: But it was a joke fight.
Henri: Yeah, it was a joke fight. We were wrestling and on some point I had my jaw as hanging freely like not beeing in tension and he accidently put his elbow upwards to my jaw. My teeth went in my lip like half a centimetre. I still have a scar there and I couldn't speak properly for five days.
Ville: But at least he got silenced because during the show day he was talking so much and we got fed up of all the taking. So, we decided that we have to be silent for thirty minutes. It was a challenge and to emphasis the whole thing we also shut down the lights and just had a candle.
Henri: And suddenly the Norwegian gig arranger came to the room. He opend the door and asked 'Do you guys want a beer?' And we were sitting there like this. He was like 'Okaay' and shut the door and left. We are Finnish we don't like to talk.
finnbands: Yeah, he must have thought this.
finnbands: You just released your Album in the beginning of the year but do you already have some new material?
Both: No.
Henri: There's never new material you try. When we start to go for a studio album it's always from the scratch and you can never predict what the next album will sound like. We've done some stuff a couple of weeks ago. That was in vein of an earlier album but just made for fun. Let's see if the material will ever be used. As I said when we go for the studio we always start from the scratch and what ever we like to listen to at that moment it will affect our songwriting. There are a lot of 'The Cure' influences. Poor Robert Smith. I mean he must be really poor in live not monetarily but c'mon this guy has been singing for 25 years how crappy everything is.
Ville: Maybe it is and he's the only one who can see the truth. (laughter)
Henri: This mansion with playboy chicks and pool doesn't bring me happiness what can I do? Write more songs and get more money. (laughter) I like Robert Smith.
finnbands: So, I'm done with my questions. Is there something you want to say to...
Henri (interrupting): We can go on praising Robert Smith for half an hour!
Ville: Can I ask you a question?
finnbands: Yes.
Ville: Did you enjoy the finnish summer? (laughter)
[Editors Note: The weeks before the weather was rainy and chilly with just a few days of sunshine ]
finnbands: Not this year! But we had the same weather in Germany. So, what can you do...
Henri: But at least we don't have this things here that we in Finnish call 'saksan ampiaiset'
finnbands: What's that?
Henri: German wasps.
finnbands: You mean the big ones.
Henri: Yeah, they are so bad so we had to call them not regular wasps but German wasps. They are evil.
finnbands: We have a different name for them but I can't remember the English name right now. In German they are 'Hornissen'
Henri: Ah, Hornets.
Ville: He loves all kind of bugs and things like this. (grinning)
Henri: I've been in our parents summer cottage three weeks ago and even I've been there many times before it was always fun. But this summer the hornets, this fucking beasts, not the German ones but the Finnish equivalent had built a couple of nests underneath the door. So when we were sitting outside eating it was living hell for me because I'm scared, I hate them and I'm allergic to them. The combination of those three is hell.
Ville: I hope you get something out of it.
finnbands: I hope so too. Especially because the background noise is so loud. Thank you very much for the interview.

Das Tuska Festival war eine der wenigen Shows bei denen Mastermind Henri Sorvali, der normalerweise nicht mit auf Tour kommt, selbst in die Saiten griff. Wir hatten die Chance, ein Interview mit ihm und seinem Bruder Ville zu machen.
finnbands: Für alle die Moonsorrow noch nicht kennen, bitte beschreibt eure Band und euren Musikstil in kurzen Worten.
Henri: Wir spielen lange Songs, wir verwenden verdammt viel Verzerrer und wir hassen Leute.
Ville: Das ist wahr.
Henri (zu Ville): Du bist an der Reihe.
Ville: Ich kommentier das mal nicht.
finnbands: Ihr wart vor kurzem mit Swallow the Sun und Debauchery auf Tour. Wie war es auf der Tour?
Henri: Ich war nicht auf Tour.
Ville: Es war großartig. Wir waren mit einer netten Gruppe von Leuten für drei Wochen im selben Bus und spielten jede Menge tolle Gigs. Es waren auch einige nicht so tolle Shows dabei, das passiert aber auf jeder Tour, schönes Sightseeing in den verschiedenen Städten und ganz viele Touristenfotos.
finnbands: Wie ist das Publikum in den verschiedenen Ländern? Gibt es da Unterschiede zum Beispiel in Finnland, Deutschland oder Italien?
Ville: Ich weiß nicht so recht. Das kann ganz unterschiedlich sein, man kann da keine generelle Aussage machen. In manchen Ländern kannst du natürlich schon vorher sagen wie es wird. Wie jetzt in Ungarn, da ist das Publikum immer total am ausrasten. In Italien hatten wir jetzt nur einen Gig und da waren nur hundert Leute in einer Halle in die locker Tausend rein gepasst hätten, das war schon ein seltsamer Gig.
finnbands: Wie fandet ihr eure heutige Show?
Ville: Großartig!
Henri: Es war verdammt ärgerlich, weil ich stark eingeschränkt war.
finnbands: Wie das?
(Beide fangen an zu lachen)
Henri: Weil einige Bandmitglieder mit ernsthaften Verletzungen auf die Bühne gegangen sind und wir das trotzdem durchgezogen haben.
finnbands: Was meinst du mit ernsthaften Verletzungen?
Henri: Markus Bein war so stark angeschwollen, dass es bis auf die Größe meines Beins angeschwollen war. Er war in Nordfinnland und wurde dort von irgendeinem komischen Insekt gebissen. Im Moment ist sein Bein wie ein Baum und er kann kaum noch laufen. Ich habe mir letzte Woche einige Rippen gebrochen.
finnbands: Oh je.
Henri: Ich hab den ganzen Tag nur Schmerzmittel genommen.
Ville (grinsend): Und er war damals nicht betrunken gewesen.
Henri: Nö, ich war überhaupt nicht betrunken. (beide fangen an zu lachen)
finnbands: Im nüchternen Zustand passieren einem die schlimmsten Sachen.
Ville: Er war betrunken.
Henri: Nö, ich war total voll und viel aus einem Meter Höhe in einer dieser Kabelboxen aus Holz und Metall, aber Dinge passieren und Menschen sterben.
finnbands: Das hört sich wirklich übel an.
Henri: Versuch mal eine Nacht in meine Lage zu versetzten. Ich wache jede Stunde wegen Schmerzen auf.
Ville: So was passiert ständig in dieser Band.
Henri: Es ist immer nur Schmerz und morgen spielen wir dann The Cure-Cover (zu Ville) und zu wirst der nächste Robert Smith. (Gelächter)
finnbands: Ihr könnt ja jetzt schon auf einige Jahre Karriere zurück blicken. Gibt es da Sachen von denen ihr sagt, dass es ein großer Fehler war?
Henri: Unser erstes Album.
Ville (unterbricht ihn): Am Anfang, unser erster Plattenvertrag.
Henri: Nicht das Album, sondern der Vertrag.
Ville: Wir waren jung und wir müssten noch lernen und wir haben sehr schnell gelernt.
Henri: Wir waren jung und brauchten das Geld. (Gelächter) Wir haben einen miesen Vertrag mit einer scheiß - Plattenfirma gemacht. Die wollten uns ausbeuten. Aber wenn man ehrlich ist, hätten wir diesen Vertrag nicht gemacht, wären wir heute nicht hier und nach all den Erfahrungen die wir gemacht haben, stell dir mal vor wir hätten drei Platten für Plasmatica Records gemacht.
Ville (mit einem gequälten Lächeln): Oh ja.
finnbands (zu Ville): Ich hab gehört du würdest studieren. Wie weit bist du mit deinem Studium?
Ville: Ich studiere schon seit fast drei Jahren nicht mehr. Aber ich bin gerade am herum telefonieren, dass ich irgendwann wieder zurück an die Uni kann.
Henri: Zukünftiger Mathelehrer.
Ville: Ich hab nur herausgefunden, dass arbeiten einfach profitabler ist.
finnbands: Und seit ihr jetzt nur Musiker oder habt ihr auch noch normale Jobs?
Ville: Ich hab mehrere.
Henri: Sagen wir es mal so, ich arbeite in der Spiele - Branche. Das ist eine lange Geschichte und du wirst lachen, weil ich in der Handyspiele-Industie arbeite. Klar klingt das cool wenn ich sage, ich arbeite in der Spiele-Industrie. *Hust* Han *hust* dy Spiele-Industrie (lacht) ich bin dort Sound Designer.
finnbands: Was waren eure besten Momente auf der Bühne oder besondere Shows an die ihr euch erinnern könnt?
Ville: Eine der besten Momente auf der Bühne? Das war gerade letzte Woche in Belgien. Als mir klar wurde...
Henri (fällt ihm ins Wort): dass du nackt bist. (Lacht)
Ville: Ja, zumindest kam es mir so vor. Ein paar Augenblicke bevor das Intro anfing, hab ich mal hinter dem Vorhang geschaut, was in dem Zelt so los ist und das Zelt, dass ein Fassungsvermögen von fast zehntausend Leuten hatte, war total voll und es waren auch noch Leute davor. Ich hab nur gedacht ‚Was zum Teufel mach ich hier eigentlich?'
Henri: Während dessen hab ich Bier getrunken.
Ville: Nein, es war wirklich großartig so viele Menschen auf einem unserer Konzerte zu sehen. Das ist noch niemals zuvor so gewesen.
finnbands: Und eines eurer schlechtesten Erlebnisse mit Moonsorrow?
Ville: Davon gibt es viele.
Henri: Norwegen.
Ville: Oh ja, Norwegen.
Henri: Wir fingen morgens um 10 Uhr schon mit dem Trinken an.
Ville: Ja, gleich nachdem wir dort angekommen waren.
Henri: Und unser Auftritt war erst um 1 Uhr nachts. Wir haben ungefähr 14 Stunden Bier und anderes Zeug gesoffen, dann sind wir auf die Bühne und nach dem Auftritt, bei dem wir absolut mies gespielt haben, schuldigten wir uns gegenseitig an wegen des schlechten Auftritts. Ich hab mich mit Ville gekloppt und Ville hatte eine Rangelei mit Mitja, dann haben wir uns noch mehr besoffen und alles hat sich wieder beruhigt.
Ville: Er hat sich den Kiefer gebrochen.
Henri: Oh, das war mir total entfallen. Der Drummer hatte mich am Kopf getroffen.
Ville: Aber das war nur eine Rauferei so zum Spaß.
Henri: Wir haben einen kleinen Ringkampf gemacht. Irgendwann hatte ich den Mund offen, also nicht unter Spannung oder so und plötzlich nimmt er seinen Ellenbogen nach oben und trifft mich am Kiefer. Meine Zähne haben sich ungefähr einen halben Zentimeter tief in meine Lippe gebohrt. Ich hab da immer noch eine Narbe und konnte fast fünf Tage nicht richtig sprechen.
Ville: Aber er war wenigstens ruhig, denn tagsüber hat er so viel gelabert und wir waren echt schon ziemlich genervt davon. Deswegen hatten wir dann auch beschlossen, dass wir einfach dreißig Minuten ganz still zu sein. Das war eine Herausforderung und um das ganze noch zu verstärken, haben wir alle Lichter ausgemacht und nur eine Kerze angezündet.
Henri: Und plötzlich kam der norwegische Veranstalter in den Raum. Er hat die Tür aufgemacht, fragte ob wir ein Bier wollen und wir saßen so rum. Er meinte dann nur ‚Ohhkayy' und hat die Tür ganz schnell wieder zu gemacht. Wir sind Finnen wir reden nicht gerne. (Gelächter)
finnbands: Das muss er wohl gedacht haben.
finnbands: Euer letztes Album habt ihr gerade am Anfang des Jahres heraus gebracht, aber habt ihr trotzdem schon neues Material geschrieben?
Beide: Nein.
Henri: Wir probieren niemals mit neuem Material rum. Wenn wir ins Studio gehen, dann fangen wir immer wieder bei Null an und man kann niemals sagen, wie das neue Album wird. Wir haben vor einigen Wochen ein paar Sachen probiert, das war so in der Art wie das Vorgängeralbum, aber das war nur so zum Spaß. Wir werden sehen, ob das jemals verwendet wird. Wie schon gesagt, wenn wir ins Studio gehen, fangen wir immer bei Null an und alles was wir uns zu diesem Zeitpunkt gerne anhören, fließt ein bisschen mit ins Songwriting mit ein. Es gibt viele ‚The Cure' Einflüsse, der arme Robert Smith. Ich meine, der Kerl ist wirklich arm dran, nicht in Gelddingen aber nun mal ehrlich. Er singt seit 25 Jahren, wie schlimm alles ist.
Ville: Vielleicht ist es so und er ist der einzige, der die Wahrheit erkennen kann. (Gelächter)
Henri: Diese Villa mit all den Playboy-Girls und dem Pool macht mich nicht glücklich was kann ich nur tun? Mehr Songs schreiben und noch mehr Geld verdienen. (Gelächter) Ich mag Robert Smith.
finnbands: Ich bin durch mit meinen Fragen. Möchtet ihr noch etwas..
Henri(unterbricht): Wir könnten noch eine halbe Stunde lang Robert Smith Lobpreisen.
Ville: Kann ich etwas fragen?
finnbands: Klar!
Ville: Hat dir der finnische Sommer gefallen? (Gelächter)
[Anmerkung: In den Wochen zuvor war es regnerisch, kühl und nur wenige sonnige Tage.]
finnbands: Dieses Jahr nicht, aber wir haben das selbe Wetter auch in Deutschland. Da kann man nichts machen.
Henri: Aber wenigstens haben wir hier nicht diese Dinger die wir ‚saksan ampiaset' nennen.
finnbands: Was ist das?
Henri: Deutsche Wespen.
finnbands: Ach du meinst die Großen.
Henri: Ja, die sind so schlimm. Wir mussten sie deutsche Wespen nennen, denn die sind nicht normal. Die sind Böse.
finnbands: Wir nennen die anders. Die heißen Hornissen.
Ville (grinsend): Er liebt Insekten und dieses ganze Viehzeug.
Henri: Ich war vor drei Wochen im Sommerhäuschen meiner Eltern und ich davor schon so oft dort war und es immer Spaß gemacht hat, aber dieses Mal haben diese Hornissen, also nicht die deutsche sondern die finnische Version, einige Nester unter der Tür gebaut. Als wir dann zum Essen draußen gesessen haben, war das für mich die Hölle auf Erden. Ich hab Angst vor den Viechern, ich hasse sie und ich habe eine Allergie. Die Kombination aus allen dreien ist höllisch.
Ville: Ich hoffe du bekommst irgendwas zusammen.
finnbands: Ich hoffe auch. Spezielle wegen diesem Lärm im Hintergund. Vielen Dank für das Interview.
