Moonsorrow interview, answered by Ville Sorvali (bass/vocals)
1- Between old albums such like "Tämä Ikuinen Talui" up to the most recent works, we can see a progressive change in your music. It's like, among other things, you have been changing the blast-beats for beers. ¿What macabre ralationship do the Moonsorrow members keep with this blonde, kind, frothy and fresh woman named BEER?
Beer is the drink of gods and, as such, a great source of inspiration.
2. Moonsorrow is a band melodically nourished by a lot of folkloric passages. This kind of fragments, you get them influenced by your national folklore, by the epic cinema...?
For some part, the folk music must be in our pagan blood. As an inspiration, it is an inseparable part of our being. We are great adorers of traditional folk music, and that has also made its way to our music. Epic cinema is cool, but has no real connection with this subject. :)
3. At the time of using folkloric elements, are all the ideas of your own creation or you're open to the wise advice of some local grandfather, who surely knows better the traditional music?
All of our music is written by us (except where noted). We know very well that we're not making the most "authentic" folk music, and that's not even the point. We're not a traditional folk band, we're a METAL band with folk music influences.
4. What do your parents and grandparents think about this curious synthesis between tradition and modernity?
a) It's nice to let the youngest generations to know the tratidions.
b) They don't like it, they think this way the roots are corrupted.
c) They just don't mind, what's made by the yound people doesn't use to count.
d) It worries them, basically because they think you are doing it due to the drugs and alcohol.
I'd say a). The only way to transfer the traditions to the next generations is to let them live and adapt to the contemporary atmosphere.
5. Your video-clip "Jumalten Kaupunki…" is almost a kind of short, like a little epic tale. Would you be attracted by the idea of directing or appearing in any film of epic or medieval type? In this way, are your worries beyond music?
I would definitely love to be involved in a good epic movie, but the thing is that I really can't act and know nothing about directing. And I really wouldn't want to be just the catering guy on the set. :)
6. In your web-page, Henri recognise himself as a fan of the video games. Can the video-games and their soundtracks be a musical influence? We're thinking in the excellent Castelvania sountrack, for example...
Yes, definitely! After all, Henri spends so many sleepless nights with them that I would be surprised if he avoided the influence. And some video games really contain so fantastic music that it already beats some movie soundtracks, the Warcraft series as an example.
7. As a band of Pagan Metal, do you pretend your music to be a way to glorify your ancestors or do you try, instead, to go forward and try to transmit a more current message for it to be a reference for the new generations?
Of course we glorify (romanticise) the past, but we also try to go forward and transfer the message to the current generations. You can't encourage people to search for their roots if you don't use the language of your time anyway.
8. And, in this globalized world, what folklore will remain for the coming generations?
Unless you count McDonald's as culture, we really don't have any folklore to be written of these times.
9. From the higher latitudes, do you think the people from the southern points of Europe are able to apreciate your music in all its splendour, or there's always some waste on the way?
There's always a universal pagan message behind the Finnish/Nordic references. If people understand and appreciate their own roots, they will also understand us.
10. We do have the sensation, perhaps a bit naive, that everyone doing this kind of Metal, of folkloric matters, do it in a sincere form, because he feels his roots are the only to be reflected in his music, but do you consider this type of Metal can be done only for his fashion state?
Pagan metal can be and, in many cases, is done for the trend, but only the sincere ones may survive and be loyally followed. Know and respect your roots if you want to build a musical concept around them. Honesty is important in whatever you do.
11. Do you think it is possible to innovate in the Pagan Metal cosmos or the "pagan" concept itself implies to be centered in a more or less clossed canons?
Cosmos is just the wider interpretation of nature, and since all in paganism is centered around nature... yes. The primordial cultures might not have had the ability to observe other planets, but we have.
12. Would you dare to try to experiment with other cultures folk music? We warn you the Catalan folk would be a great challenge...
To an extent, yes. The body of our music, however, is so distinctively Finnish that any larger steps astray would already be outside the concept. I'm not a good musician so I guess I would already have some challenge with the Finnish folk music, if I wanted to play it, that is. :)
13. The fact that some members of Moonsorrow are also working in other bands makes the band to depend on the activities of these added bands?
No, it really doesn't. Moonsorrow is the priority to each member. Some situations just demand scheduling in order to work out.
14. We guess you must have been asked for it thousands of times but… does this boom of young Finnish bands have any kind of explanation?
a) In Finland we do have an educational system much more advanced than in the rest of Europe and that includes a good degree of musical education.
b) Darkness and coldness does not exactly invite to go outside and play football.
c) The sirs in Spinefarm go to the high schools to recruit people and they force us to play extreme metal albums.
d) It is a Lapin Kulta fault, a beer with the spirit of a land untouched by human kind. A beer that tastes so fresh and pure it could only be brewed using the crystal clear streams of Finnish Lapland. Nature dictates the taste; man just completes the job...
At least not a) because our good educational system does NOT include a good degree of musical education. Also, not d) because if Lapin Kulta has any influence on music, it must be negative. :) Hence b) or c), probably the latter.
15. What are your more immediate future plans? Do you have planned any tour presenting "Verisäkeet"?
We have a few gigs to promote the album, check out the live calendar at our website for updates. No tours are planned as of yet. The foremost plan is to drink beer.

1- Desde vuestros antiguos trabajos como"Tämä Ikuinen Talui" hasta los nuevos discos, podemos ver un cambio progresivo en vuestra música. Entre otras cosas, por ejemplo, habéis cambiado los "Blast-beats" por cerveza. ¿Qué macabre relación tienen los miembros de Moonsorrow con esta rubia, con clase y espumosa llamada CERVEZA?
La cerveza es la bebida de los dioses, pero también, una gran fuente de inspiración.
2. Moonsorrow es una banda que se alimenta en gran medida con pasajes folklóricos. La inspiración para estos fragmentos ¿Se consigue a través de las tradiciones de vuestra tierra, a través del cine épico...?
Por una parte, el folklore está en nuestra sangre pagana. Es una inspiración, es una parte inseparable de nuestro ser. Somos grandes adoradores de la música folkl tradicional, y esto es algo que influye inevitablemente en nuestra música. El cine épico es chulo, pero no tiene ninguna verdadera conexión con esto. :)
3. Cuando hay que usar elementos del folklore, son todo ideas tuyas de creación propia o estás abierto a los consejos de algún abuelo del sitio, quien seguramente conoce mejor la música tradicional?
Toda nuestra música está escrita por nosotros mismos (excepto donde lo indicamos). Sabemos que no hacemos una música folk absolutamente "auténtica", aún no es el momento para ello. No somos una banda de folk tradicional, nosotros somos un grupo de METAL con influencias de la música folk.
4. ¿Qué piensan vuestros padres y demás parientes respecto a esta curiosa síntesis entre tradición y modernidad?
a) Está bien para que las nuevas generaciones conozcan la música tradicional.
b) No les gusta, creen que así se corrompen las raíces.
c) No les importa, lo que hacen los jóvenes no cuenta.
d) Están preocupados, básicamente porque creen que haces esto bajo los efectos de las drogas y el alcohol.
Yo diría a). El único modo de transferir las tradiciones a las siguientes generaciones es dejarles que las vivan y adapten a la atmósfera contemporánea.
5. Vuestro video-clip "Jumalten Kaupunki…" es casi una especie de corto, como un pequeño cuento épico. ¿No estás por la idea de la dirección o de aparicer en alguna película de tipo épico o medieval? ¿Viendo esto, tus preocupaciones van más allá de la música?
Realmente me gustaría estar involucrado en alguna buena película épica, pero hay que decir que no puedo actuar y no sé nada de dirección. Y no me gustaría ser sólo el chaval del catering en el rodaje. :)
6. En vuestra web, Henri reconoce ser un fan de los videojuevos. Pueden ser los videojuegos y sus bandas sonoras una influencia musical? Estamos pensando en una excelente banda sonora como es la de Castelvania, por ejemplo...
Sí, sin duda! Después de todo, Henrise pasa tantas noches en vela jugando, que me sorprendería que no le influenciara. Y algunos vídeojuegos realmente tienen una música tan buena que machaca a algunas bandas sonoras de películas, la serie Warcraft es un ejemplo.
7. ¿Como una banda de Metal Pagano, pretendes que tu música sea un modo de glorificar a tus antepasados o en cambio, lo que intentas es mirar hacia adelante y tratar de transmitir un mensaje más corriente para ser una referencia para las generaciones nuevas?
Desde luego que glorificamos (románticamente) el pasado, pero también tratamos de ir adelante y transferir el mensaje a las generaciones actuales. No puedes animar a la gente a buscar sus raíces si no usas la lengua de su tiempo.
8. ¿En este mundo globalizado, qué tradiciones les quedarán a las próximas generaciones?
A no ser que cuentes al McDonald como cultura, realmente no tenemos ninguna tradición actual para ser escrita.
9. Desde las latitudes nórdicas, ¿Creéis que la gente del sur de Europa está preparada para apreciar vuestra música en todo su esplendor, o siempre se va a quedar algo en el camino?
Hay siempre un mensaje universal pagano detrás de las referencias Finlandesas/nórdicas. Si la gente entiende y aprecia sus propias raíces, también nos entenderán.
10. Tenemos la sensación, quizás algo ingénua, que todos los que practican este estilo de Metal, de tendencias tracidionales, lo hacen de una forma sincera, puesto que sienten que sus raíces son lo principal que debe reflejar su música. ¿Crees que ésto sólo es el fruto de una moda pasajera?
El Pagan Metal puede estar hecho, y en algunos casos, está hecho según las tendencias, pero sólo los sinceros sobrevivirán y tendrán seguidores. Conoce y respeta tus raíces si quieres que sean el concepto alrededor del cual construyes tu música. Ser honesto es importante en todo lo que hagas.
11. Crees que es posible innovar en el cosmos del Pagan Metal o el propio concepto de "Pagano" implica estar limitado a unos cánones cerrados?
El cosmos es básicamente la más amplia interpretación de la naturaleza, y ya que todo el paganismo está centrado alrededor de la naturaleza... sí. Las antiguas culturas no tenían la posibilidad de observar otros planetas, pero nosotros sí.
12. ¿Estarías dispuesto a experimentar con las tradiciones de otras culturas? Te advertimos que el folk catalán sería un gran desafío...
Hasta cierto punto, sí. El cuerpo de nuestra música, sin embargo, es particularmente tan distintiva de Finlandia que cualquier paso más allá ya estaría fuera del concepto. No soy un buen músico, creo que ya tendría ciertas dificultades con la música folklórica finlandesa, si quisiera tocarla. :)
13. ¿El hecho que algunos miembros de Moonsorrow toquen también en otros grupos hace que la banda dependa de las actividades de esas otras bandas?
No, no sucede esto. Moonsorrow es la prioridad de cada miembro. Algunas situaciones exigen de una planificación para calcular fechas, pero nada más.
14. Seguro que esto ya te lo han preguntado miles de veces pero... ¿Este auge de jóvenes bandas finlandesas tiene alguna explicación?
a) En Finlandia tenemos un sistema educativo mucho más avanzado que en el resto de Europa y esto incluye un buen nivel de educación musical.
b) La oscuridad y el frío no invitan precisamente a salir a la calle y jugar al fútbol.
c) Los señores de Spinefarm van a los institutos a reclutar a jóvenes y los fuerzan a hacer discos de metal extremo.
d) Es culpa de la cerveza Lapin Kulta, una cerveza con el espíritu de una tierra no tocada por la raza humana. Una cerveza que al degustarla se obtiene una frescura y una pureza tal que sólo puede se puede elaborar usando las cristalinas y claras corrientes de la Laponia Finlandesa. La naturaleza dicta su gusto; el hombre sólo completa el trabajo...
Como mínimo no a la a) porque nuestro buen sistema educativo no incluye un buen nivel de educación musical. Así, no a la d) porque si la Lapin Kulta tiene cualquier influencia sobre la música, sería negativa.:) De ahí o la b) o la c), probablemente ésta última.
15. ¿Qué vais a hacer en un futuro presente? ¿Habéis planificado algún tour presentando el "Verisäkeet"?
Tenemos algunos conciertos para promocionar el disco, se actualizan constantemente en el calendario de fechas de nuestra web. No tenemos ningún tour planificado.
