'Til Your Ears Bleed compilation / March 1999

How did things start? Is the line up the same since the very beggining?

[Ville] Things just started as with our other projects; we were seeking for a new channel for our musical expression. We really couldn't predict that Moonsorrow would be alive today, but now it seems that this channel was the natural choice for us as most of the other projects have long since fell apart. The line-up has always consisted of Henri and me and so it shall be, even if we might take in a session drummer for the next recording.

Do you aggree with the Moonsorrow's description: symphonic extreme Metal? How would you describe it? Do you think that is important to label the band's music style?

[Ville] There's nothing wrong with your description, although I think that it's a bit too narrow in order to cover the music of Moonsorrow properly. But as I don't prefer categories, I usually describe the music just as Pagan Metal. I want that the listeners to build up their own conceptions.

You have a new demo out (a great demo indeed!!)... How things are now with Moonsorrow?

[Ville] Thanks for the compliment! If forgetting our personal lives, things are pretty good; the demo sells fairly and we have got more than enough of (truthfully) flattering feedback. Some labels have shown interest but no deals have been offered yet, we just have to wait and see. Henri has, by the way, got an impulse for composing almost 24h/day so mostly thanks to him we already have some new material to be rehearsed...

As you are 2 man band, is that easy to play live concerts? Could you describe a live appearence of Moonsorrow? If you never played alive, could you share your ideas and visions of how it should be?

[Ville] Due to prevailing conditions (line-up) we have never played live with Moonsorrow, and we never will do it either as a two-piece. We have discussed with some friends who would be willing to support us by session live appearance, but we haven't yet planned a thing about any gigs. It seems that if it will ever happen, Henri would play the guitar and I would do the bass and the vocals. Session members would then take care of the synths, the other guitar and the drums. The appearance itself should be full of energy and leave no one empty.

Comment:
-Moon

[Ville] Moonshine makes the night so beautiful. It's always enchanting to wander at nights guided by the Moon.

[Henri] The brother of the Sun.

-Sorrow

[Ville] Sorrow is an inevitable part of human life, but one should take the strength from it instead of just grieving.

[Henri] There is no sorrow without joy, but would it be corny if the band name was Sunjoy?

-Beer & Blood

[Ville] How are these connected, if not speaking about how alcohol flows in the veins? Anyway, this might sound banal, but blood is the life (think about it). And beer is of course the drink of gods!

[Henri] When you drink enough beer (as we), blood might start flowing.

Now is time for one of our favorite questions... about Vinyl (off course!!). What is you opinion about Vinyl editions? Do you see any future for it?

[Ville] Heh, my vinyl player has long been broken, but if it was fixed I would of course collect many vinyls. I think vinyl editions are great but their future in this technologic society is uncertain.

[Henri] I think vinyl manages to capture the essence of music, and besides the sound is much more warmer than on a disc.

We know that you are a strong appreciator of alcoholic drinks. Could you advice us a good/ strong alcoholic drink from Finland?

[Ville] Well, mostly I drink beer and when I drink spirits I take them just in shots. This is somewhat an economical choice. But of course I can drink almost anything that contains alcohol... What I could recommend is the national drink of Finland: Koskenkorva! It is an old traditional spirit made of grain and the alcoholic volume is 38%. Whenever you come to Finland, do not pass it!

[Henri] There is a great "shot" (12cl!) which is called Roadcrew's Death. It contains 4cl of Jägermeister, 4cl of Mint spirit and 4cl of Vermouth... everything 40% strong. After a couple of these you start to crawl back into your coffin again...

Drink & Kill!! (last words, thought and comments... free time!!)

[Ville] Eternal hails for this honour to be featured on the European Attack!! Anyone interested is adviced to get in touch and/or to purchase our demos for $5 each. Thanks to all supporters! Follow thy heart and do not be led by anyone!

[Henri] Thanks a helluva lot for this interview and the opportunity to spread our message throughout the underground. Raise your swords in the name of metal!
